There is a charming collection of restaurants and simple souvenir shops in Candidasa, as well as a few basic mini-marts. Close by is the year-old walled village of Tenganan, where the residents practise a time-honoured lifestyle based around ritual and ceremony. The beach at Candidasa is sandy and golden, albeit narrow due to erosion. There is however, a beautiful beach known as Pasir Putih five kilometres to the east and snorkelling and diving off Candidasa is good with some excellent sites close to the shore and accessible by local boat.
The Bali Dream Suite Villa Seminyak Hotel
Padang Bai Harbour, the stepping off point for Lombok, is a further nine kilometres around the bay, and here you will find the Blue Lagoon, another superb snorkelling and dive site. Canggu, Indonesia top. Canggu has become the collective name for a number of villages including Berawa, Tegal Gundul, Tiyingtukul, Pererenan, Nelayan and Babakan , which, until very recently, could still be described as a sleepy coastal locale. It's now one of Bali's coolest districts. Here, amongst the rice fields which extend all the way down to the beach, you will not only find some of the most luxurious private residences on the island, but also a great selection of eclectic restaurants, cafes, bakeries, boutiques and beach bars — especially along Jalan Batu Bolong, which runs right down to the beach.
Canggu is also an area that most surfers will know about, with reef swells that are larger than those you will find further south in Kuta and Seminyak. Finns Recreation Club for which many holiday villas in the area include guest membership offers social and leisure amenities, including Splash waterpark, Bounce trampoline centre, Strike bowling, a state-of-the art gym, a 25m swimming pool and a tennis and squash centre. Along the coast to the north of Canggu is Pura Tanah Lot; a sea temple perched high on a craggy wave-lashed rock and probably the most photographed sight in Bali.
Jimbaran, Indonesia top. In spite of the many five-star developments in the area, Jimbaran Beach remains unspoilt and tranquil, the pace is still unhurried, the atmosphere relaxed and the sand soft and golden. The entrance to the bay is blocked by an unbroken coral reef, so although the calm water is not suitable for surfing, it is a safe haven for swimming. During the daytime it attracts guests from the nearby resorts, together with the occasional windsurfer.
In the late afternoons, Balinese families come down to the beach. Kids paddle in the shallows and build sandcastles that are more reminiscent of miniature Taj Mahals than of Norman fortresses. The magnificent crescent bay is west facing, so at sunset the beach becomes the scene of a daily ritual as hundreds of visitors take their ringside seats at the plethora of seafood warungs ; these simple beachside cafes run virtually the length of the bay and serve up the catch of the day.
Ketewel, Indonesia top. Surrounded by terraced rice fields, tobacco plantations and banana groves, the sprawling fishing community of Ketewel presents a picture-perfect version of Bali. Comprising of a string of coastal villages, the area boasts awe-inspiring views across the ocean towards the beaches of Sanur and Nusa Dua, the islands of Lembongan, Ceningan and Penida, as well as the stunning mountains of East Bali.
Despite its outstanding natural beauty and excellent location a mere minute drive from the airport, Ketewel still attracts relatively few visitors and provides a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of some of the nearby beach towns. There are plenty of things to do in Ketewel and its neighbouring areas. The best way to experience its rural charm is by walking or cycling along the many quiet rural roads and rice-field walkways. Both are a short drive away and offer a great day out for the whole family.
For lovers of art, crafts and culture, Ketewel is only half an hour away from the mountain town of Ubud, with its excellent markets and royal palace. Nusa Dua, Indonesia top. Perched among green hills and impressive cliff-tops overlooking the Indian Ocean, Nusa Dua oozes glamour, peacefulness and beauty. Take Geger Beach for example, blessed by Mother Nature with some of the warmest waters in Bali and a lovely cooling eastern breeze.
A beautiful natural rock formation, it does exactly what it says on the tin by creating a giant water blow the moment the waves hit the rocks.

Nusa Lembongan, Indonesia top. The minute boat ride across the Badung Strait from Sanur is a great way to seriously slow down: leaving the hustle and bustle of the mainland behind and stepping ashore at Mushroom Beach is akin to stepping back in time — many say several decades! Laid back and easy-going, Nusa Lembongan is blissfully traffic-free — few cars, no buses, mostly just scooters and bicycles. The eight-square-kilometre tropical island is ringed with white-sand beaches, limestone bluffs and mangrove forests and fringed by a coral reef.
The shallow coral reefs attract snorkellers, while the more adventurous head for the surf breaks and cliff-jumping sites. By 4pm the crowds have gone, and this beautiful beach of white sand becomes the preserve of lucky overnight residents, who have the run of barefoot beach bars, cafes and an increasing number of restaurants. Sanur, Indonesia top. Drawn by its exotic location, laid-back attitude and bohemian vibes, Sanur attracts a well-heeled, mature and sophisticated crowd. Times have definitely moved on since then, but Sanur retains the same eclectic vibe that made it so popular in the first place.
Its relatively gentle ocean swell, incredible panoramas and lengthy beachfront promenade make it a great spot for tanning, swimming, strolling and catching the sunrise. Despite its quaint reputation there are plenty of things to do in Sanur, including day time and night time beach markets which sell the full range of traditional local crafts, cheap souvenirs and fresh produce.
It also has an excellent range of quality restaurants and a surprising number of evening entertainment venues. For a slice of local history and culture, we recommend a visit to the Le Mayeur Museum — home of the famous Belgian painter who was one of the early Bali pioneers. You can combine it with a trip to Pura Blanjong, a temple housing a stone column said to be the oldest man-made artefact in Bali. Less developed than the main island and only half an hour away by speedboat, they offer awesome diving and snorkelling opportunities — perfect for a day trip.
Selong Belanak, Indonesia top. Hidden from the crowds, at the southern end of Lombok, lies Selong Belanak Beach - the best surfing spot on the island for beginners. The white secluded beach has powdery sand which turns almost light grey with fainting sun rays. The beach extends into semi-rural villages with lush green paddy fields rising up into the Jabon Hills. Tropical forests carpet the hills as they tower over the semi-circular bay, with breathtaking views of turquoise water that seems to change colour as the day goes by.
A holiday in Selong Belanak is quiet and peaceful, a chance to slow down and witness local villagers go about their daily life. Located on the south-west coast, it offers spectacular sunsets viewed from various points, both on the beach and on top of the hills. Things to do in Selong Belanak vary according to the amount of exertion you prefer.
